Furnishing Technology

Students in Senior High Furnishing Technology have the unique opportunity to imagine, investigate, design and create a variety of work-pieces over a two-year-cycle. Students are encouraged to view the resources of the world through a designing eye and to use them responsibly to cater for the needs of people with respect to furnishing.

As people who are made in the image of a God of wonder and beauty who creates things of wonder and beauty, so should students be encouraged to strive for beauty and function in their own creations. In Furnishing Technology, students are encouraged to imagine, investigate, design and create both for enjoyment and for producing functional furniture to be admired and used within the community.

Senior High Furnishing Technology is beneficial to students considering careers such as builder, cabinetmaker, picture framer, furnishing design and wood machinist.

The two key strands of this course are design and production. Students may use computer aided drawing software, including Autodesk Inventor, to design their projects before producing them. Therefore, the study of Graphics in Years Nine and Ten, while not a prerequisite, is highly advantageous. The knowledge of joining and finishing techniques studied in Years Nine and Ten Woodwork is also beneficial for Senior High Furnishing Technology.

Students are expected to commit a portion of their own time outside of normal school hours to complete practical and theory projects and participate in industry visits.
